The Coffee Route is a responsible eco tourist initiative that wants to protect and make re-live the culture and tradition of the provinces of Hermanas Mirabal and Monsenor Nouel through the valorisation of the area and the promotion of local typical products, coffee in particular.
The Coffee Route strategy is to involve the institutions that have a central role in the provinces so that they can satisfy the beneficiary people and the families training them and coordinating them.
The Coffee Route offers you an eco tourist trail that crosses some of the more uncontaminated places of the provinces Hermanas Mirabal and Monsenor Nouel, in the Dominican Republic: six eco tourist paths to visit walking or on donkey back, during which you can observe coffee plantations, blooming tropical vegetation, mountain rivers, bamboo plantations etc., and enjoy the local population hospitality.
Expert environmental guides escort groups of tourists during the whole trail, showing them places still not known to mass tourism. Apart from this, tourists can live some days in the houses of the area inhabitants to know better the local culture and taste traditional kitchen local products.
The Coffee Route previews visits to the plantations –the fincas- of coffee, cocoa and other local cultivations, to know the centenary traditional harvest techniques and manual coffee cultivation, but also the “modern” methods used nowadays and the ones that produce organic and quality coffee; tasting of Atabey and Jamao coffee; visit to the laboratories of local craftsmen that work the leather, the bamboo, etc., as well as the welcome in the tourist structures and the recommended restaurants.
The Coffee Route inclines the visitors towards the culture of local coffee and its products: in the case of Salcedo the Jamao coffee and in the case of Bonao the Atabey coffee (mother earth in taina language), both produced and transformed under environment regulations for little local producers and commercialised as organic and quality coffees in the International and National markets.
